“Maximus is a powerful Roman general, loved by the people and the aging Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Before his death, the Emperor chooses Maximus to be his heir over his own son, Commodus, and a power struggle leaves Maximus and his family condemned to death. Trivia: Maximus’s companion is his pet wolf, played in the film by a German Shepherd. The production was unable to use real wolves because England’s strict anti-rabies laws prevented them from importing any of the animals.
Goofs: Miscellaneous: In the opening battle, when the two armies run together, a Roman soldier in the center of the screen is clearly laughing at the battle, and not taking part. Some report several others laughing.
